About Charles County

Charles County offers easy accessibility to the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The county is 15 miles south of the National Capital Beltway so it is conveniently located for travel to federal government buildings, business centers, and military bases.

An order in council is responsible for the creation of the current Charles County, which is 643 square miles large. It replaced Old Charles County, which existed only for about three years in the 1600s. This county is often considered to be one of Maryland’s hidden treasures.
