About Prince George’s County

Prince George’s County is ideally situated in the Baltimore/Washington corridor. The county shares a border with Washington, DC, and is only 37 miles from Baltimore. This area offers wonderful diversity with an urban atmosphere and scenic beauty.

Land from two other counties – Calvert and Charles – formed the basis for this county, which consists of about 500 square miles. It came into existence on April 23, 1696, which is St. George’s Day. The county name refers to Prince George of Denmark, who was the husband to Princess Anne, the heir to the English throne.
